Dad was not at home

Audrey remembers…

I took the letter and put it on the mantelpiece. Mother came in, read it and went to a neighbour’s house. When she came back she had the letter in her hand and was tapping it nervously. She said, “Audrey your dad is dead,” and that was the only time she ever spoke of it. Some nights she would just lie down by the hearth and cry herself to sleep.
