Make do
and mend Mr H. remembers…
There was one lady up our road…she was only about 17 or 18 and she decided
to go on the buses as a conductress – be about 1942 or ’43 and ‘er was
saying to me mother, ‘I’ve only joined so’s I can get a couple of decent
skirts and some slacks and a coat’… they had two skirts, two slacks and an
overcoat as well. Some of the girls that went on the buses during the war,
you never saw them in a frock or anything, they was always in their uniform
– mind you, they had to work about twelve hours a day, so no point in it –
they’d only get decked up for the odd dance or two…
