Dig for
Victory Mrs C. remembers… Food being on ration she could ill afford the waste… We were encouraged to grow our own vegetables, it was called Dig for Victory. Ships that brought food from other countries were being sunk by German submarines, they tried to starve us into submission. Oranges and bananas being grown overseas were soon then rare. Our apples would be peeled and cored and hung with string through the hole like a long necklace across the ceiling to dry until brown and leathery. Then immersed in water to plump them up again when needed. Mother would bottle tomatoes; green beans were put into a jar with salt to keep. Eggs were scarce for a reason I never did understand, but when we got them they were boiled and shelled and put in jars in a preserving liquid called isinglass, no fridge and freezers then… Oral History Recording, Walsall Local History Centre – Ref 846 |
