The formation of Caldmore Area Housing Association

<< Caldmore Area Housing Association | 13 Caldmore Green >>

A year after the formation of CRAG, Barrie Blower and Simon Major investigated the need for a Housing Association in Caldmore and on 6th December 1971, a meeting took place in The White Hart where they decided to form Caldmore Area Housing Association with Barrie Blower as Chairman and Simon Major as Secretary.

The first task was to contact solicitors, auditors and bankers and report to the following meeting with the names of suitable firms who would work with the Association. In order to become an incorporated business there were three basic requirements: firstly, to appoint a board of trustees consisting of professional and business people, secondly to gain local authority approval and thirdly to have an overdraft facility. The registered office of the Caldmore Area Housing Association was, once again, 29 Victor Street.

The appointment of bankers was possibly the biggest obstacle for the emergent Housing Association to overcome. Barrie and Simon had almost abandoned finding a bank that would give an overdraft to such a venture when they approached Barclays on 18th April 1972 and found a manager who was prepared to take a considered risk.
